FOOD INDUSTRY REPORT NORDICUM scandinavian business magazine 2 • 2002
Lactose free milk – a new
success story by Valio
milk. This is a consequence of
legislation”, says Annika Mäyrä-
Mäkinen.
Valio started producing
milk products with a low lactose
content already during the late
1970s. The products developed
by Valio have been called HYLA
products, abbreviated from ”hydrolysed
lactose”. Today Valio
offers over 100 different HYLA
products on the Finnish markets.
Does the large number of
low lactose products available on
the markets mean that the lactose
intolerance rate in Finland is exceptionally
high?
”No, this is not the case”,
says Mäyrä-Mäkinen. ”Approximately
15-17 % of the Finnish
people are lactose intolerant, the
percentage is higher than in the
other Scandinavian countries or
in the Benelux countries. However,
in many other European
countries the corresponding percentage
is higher at 20-40 %. In
certain Asian and South American
countries at least two thirds
or even 90 % of the grown up
population suffer from lactose
intolerance.”
Lactose intolerance is a genetic
”devision”, which inhibits
the intestinal system from splitting
the lactose contained in
milk.
”In other words, the person
does not have a lactase enzyme,
which would split the milk or
milk product lactose. Due to this
situation, many people have reduced
their consumption of milk
products. Valio developed its
HYLA low lactose product family
in order to allow people suffering
from this problem to use
milk based products again”, says
Mäyrä-Mäkinen.
Some people even stopped
drinking milk entirely. Following
the introduction of the new
lactose free milk, many of these
people have now become milk
drinkers again.
”I think that in most countries
the lactose problem has simply
been neglected, or even denied
to a certain extent. In Finland,
profound research work
investigating the issue was
started already during the 1970s.
Most of this research work was
carried out by Valio together with
universities. During the 1980s
and 1990s a great variety of different
low lactose products were
introduced to the markets.”
”Valio initially launched
the HYLA product range in order
to make it possible for lactose
intolerant people to use milk
products, regardless of their lactose
problem. Every intolerant
person simply has to discover his
or her personal limit. Many milk
products such as mature Edam,
Gouda and Emmental cheeses do
not contain any lactose.”
Valio’s new patented
method of producing lactose free
milk involves the physical removal
of a proportion of the lactose
with chromatographic methods.
(This is referred to as the
chromatographic separation of
lactose.) Enzyme degradation is
also used. The end result is lactose
free milk or ”milk drink”.
”As the end product contains
virtually no lactose or milk
sugar, the product is officially
called milk drink, not milk. The
taste, however, is the same as the
taste of traditional milk”, says
Mäyrä-Mäkinen.
Valio’s lactose free drink
can be used just like ordinary
milk for drinking, cooking and
baking. (The cooking actually
involves less browning.) The
new drink is also more practical
from the point of view of the retailer.
”Combined with ultra clean
packaging, the new pasteurisation
method lengthens the shelf
life of the new milk far beyond
the shelf life of ordinary milk.”
”The essential point is that
the new milk tastes just the same
as ordinary milk. It lacks the distinct
sweetness of low lactose
HYLA milk. The caloric value of
the new milk is lower than that
of HYLA milk or ordinary milk.”
Lactose free milk has been
a huge success in Finland since
its launch in September 2001.
Annika Mäyrä-Mäkinen believes
that lactose free milk has enormous
market potential in Europe
as well as in other parts of the
world.
”On the whole the European
population can tolerate milk
relatively well. Nevertheless, the
tolerance figures vary quite significantly
from region to region.
There are approximately 10 million
lactose intolerant people in
Germany alone. The introduction
of lactose free milk will allow
many people to become milk
drinkers again.”
Few new products can boast
with sales figures, which
exceed preliminary estimations
tenfold. The Valio
lactose free milk formed a
success story of this kind
during the first months after
its launch in September 2001.
TWith a
potential pool of tens of
millions of lactose intolerant
consumers, the new milk drink
is expected to win new markets
in Europe and the other parts of
the world. Valio has patented a
technology, which enables the
production of totally lactose free
milk that tastes like real milk.
The company also maintains a
strong offering of low lactose
HYLA products.
As good and healthy as
milk products are, some people
simply can not cope with the lactose
contained in milk. A certain
percentage of the population of
all countries suffer from lactose
intolerance. Even small quantities
of milk cause stomach or
other intestinal problems. Valio
has produced low lactose milk
products for over 20 years. The
most recent innovation is completely
lactose free milk, which
tastes like real milk.
”To be precise, the new
drink is called milk drink, not
he sales trend has also
continued very strong after
the first few months.
